Not being able to repair my own appliances, I can't be sure, but I sure
think the older stuff was made pretty good. The house we have in VA was
built (by my father) in about 1971. We still have the original washer,
range top, oven, and dishwasher. The dry had been replaced. Oven and
cook toop work fine. Dishwasher DH had to replace something (he's fairly
handy) and so far washer has been okay. The house in Maine has the W/D
that were in it when we bought it 11 years ago. DH has made a few
repairs. Other day he replaced a belt on the washer. Started to smell
funny when spinning. Belt cost maybe 15 bucks, but if he hadn't been
capable would likely have been a 100 dollar job.
