Re: Question for the MT's

Not to mention the "bad handwriting" issues as well! I think I'll go to the check out classes for the MT school. I know it's not a easy breezy thing, neither was writing legal motions or pleadings. I've got plenty of time and need to do something productive. Thanks for your considerations, I know that some has viewed this post with skepticism but I have to do something compatible with my disabilities.

Good for you! That's the way to do it. Get a proper education, get that typing speed up, and so on. A lot of the MT folks I know started with the terminology course first to see how it would go. Of course, a lot of us were older students (and a lot were parents) and maybe a little insecure about our abilities. If you can get through that, and you will, you can get through everything else.

Unless you have a strong medical background already, you're going to need a lot more than just the accounts and the speller. A typist who can type 120 wpm would be slowed to close to zero if they had to look up every word. You must know terminology, anatomy, physiology, drug names, doses, and indications, etc. If you don't know the drug doesn't even come in 15 mg, you can easily hear that instead of the 50 the doctor mumbled through his tuna sandwich.

Hello all,
I'm disabled and in the past have (last five or so yrs) been writing legal brief's and motions and some research for some Lawyers, they're growing and doing most in house now. I'm would like to change over to do MT, I have a friend who has earned her degree and is moving on and currently does this for two or three doctors in my area. I can type 40/50 word a min and can do so at my leisure / medically retired Heart / Back PT (totally disabled) I can work late night or as long as I wish without interruption (no small kids), she would be willing to give those accounts to me, if I play her a song on my guitar. I have checked out some medical spell checkers for MS word for XP and also two transcription machines a Mini and a regular cassette. She said she would give me all her charts and such. My son works in a doctors office so if I needed clarification he could help.
My Questions are:
What amount of renumeration is typical norm for this type of work?
Is it by the line or word? or a "standard flat fee"?
How long is too long for turn around time? one, two, five days?
Any other "requirements"?
I want to be sure she is giving me correct information, any help is greatly appreciated TIA for considerations!
