I love replying to myself.... <G>
It's fixed, and I owe a huge vote of thanks to MQ tech support - took an hour and a half of of phone support and fiddling that I NEVER would have figured out on my own! Thanks a million, Carl!!

I've really made a mess this time - I can't even get my computer online now!! (Disclaimer up front: please forgive typos and/or posting errors; I'm using a friend's computer w/o an ergo KB and going through Google Groups to get here. I may wear out the backspace key on his KB before this post is done!!)
Anyway, last night my DD was doing some research for school and downloaded a "program" for Powerpoint backgrounds, which, of course, turned out to be a virus. AVG caught it, although I can't say for sure whether she ran the .exe file. I believe the virus was called something about NewDot. I ran AVG, Spybot, and AdAware, and deleted the folder and shortcuts this thing had put on my computer. When I rebooted, I got a message that the system couldn't find something to do with NewDot.dll. (This is where I probably majorly screwed things up.) I figured this stinky thing had added stuff to my registry, and I went into Regedit and took out all entries referring to NewDot (there were 3 or 4).
When I rebooted again, it said something about being unable to find Winsock. When I try to load a browser (I have DSL internet service), it says, "Windows socket initialization failed." When I try to load DocQScribe, it says, "HTTPCLIENT.DLL cannot start. Check file to determine the problem."
I have no idea where to start, only that I must have done somethng muy stupid to the system. Does anybody have any idea where I can start looking for a solution? I'm running Win98SE, BTW.
Thanks so much for any suggestions!
Anne
