I've been told that they grow according to the slant at which they're cut, so when I prune mine I make sure the cut end still on the bush is facing the way I want them to grow.

I've always been told to cut the stalks at an angle just above where there is the five-leaf cluster. (I think that's how it goes. I do it so routinely now that I don't remember exactly.). Whenever I trim mine back, they always grow at odd angles but I sort of keep them pretty and cluster-
like when I trim them at that spot.
