I was taught the same thing--and cutting above the five-leaf cluster
is important, as are periodic feedings with chemicals labeled as rose
food. I remember that she used the Ortho brand.

I remember that Mom told me the reason, but I don't remember the
rationale. She had a gorgeous rosebed along the whole south side of
her house--people literally stopped their cars to admire it.
