But I am not calling her names. I'm sorry that there are people in this
world who feel they must be offended for a certain group or people when that
certain group or people take no offense themselves. I can't speak for the
homosexuals or even black people because I am neither, but I have no
prejudice in myself towards them and am comfortable in their presence and
they recognize that and accept me better for being that way better than they
do the ones who tiptoe around them and act like they don't know what to say
to them.

You know, I used to be one of those people who kind of stared at people with
disabilities (not in a bad way--just one of those things). They seemed upset
by it and I couldn't ever feel comfortable enough to go up and talk to them
about it. THen I had Justin and I would get soooo damn mad at people staring
or averting their eyes from him, so I would go up and tell them it's okay, I
know he's different, and tell them all about him. They either got scared to
death and ran off or I even had ones in tears who thanked me for being
forward when they were afraid to approach. Is that what we're supposed to
do, pretend people who are different from us don't exist and so we walk on
eggshells and treat them with some preferential attitude because we're
afraid we'll offend them? That offends others sometimes more than out and
out treating them badly. They still have feelings and still want to be part
of the gang, and a sense of humor does so much to alleviate their feelings
of awkwardness. I'm sorry, Janice, I truly like you, but I have to disagree
with how you feel and the reaction you have towards something that to me is
humanity at its finest. When we can say and feel and joke freely and know
that there are people who appreciate it because it's better than hate and
prejudice and shying away from issues that make them uncomfortable. Again,
I'm sorry you're offended, it was definitely not meant to offend anyone, but
it was just a joke, like so many others out there about heterosexual people
that are fine and dandy to tell.

I'm sorry, you make it sound like she's in some separate group of people.
She is still the same Sonnet I grew up with who lost her virginity to my
cousin, smacked me for starting to smoke, sat beside me in church 4 times a
week trying to figure out how to get out of some duty or other, beat the
crap out of me on the basketball court one day for calling her her dad's pet
name in front of everyone, she is my .... I don't even have words. She is no
different to me being a lesbian than if she had decided to stick with guys
when we were young. And you saying it's only okay for her to tell jokes to
her friends (her gay friends is what I'm seeing implied) feels prejudicial
to me and that's sad.

wouldn't anyone take offense of me telling a joke on myself. What makes her
any different than I am? We both bleed, we both cry, we both laugh, we will
both die. I'm seeing you being offended, but I'm seeing other things between
the lines that are hurtful because you seem to not be comfortable with
homosexuals. I'm sorry and I hope you find that they are no different than
anyone else, it's only their sexual orientation, they aren't some alien
race.
