Re: Dead animals on the roads this weekend

I took a 5-hour trip this weekend, came back yesterday morning, and I
counted 9 dead deer on the road, all kinds of other small animals, and
one St. Bernard lying right on the lane division line - people were
going off the road trying to miss him. There were no houses in that
spot for miles, either. Thank goodness it wasn't a true interstate,
just a 4-lane. Then I got home, told my husband about it, and he had
been mowing the yard and saw a dog get hit on the road just a few yards
from him. He tried to save it but it was too late.

Makes me wonder if this is normal (I work so much I don't travel away
from home very much anymore). It was just kind of disturbing,
especially since my daughter was with me, and she considers the deer
that live in the woods beside us part of our family, almost. I was
getting pretty good at asking her to dig through the bag on the seat
beside her at certain moments, just to avert her attention.

I live in the country, and we have lots of deer and other critters. The county is pretty good about picking up dead animals fairly quickly. It is pretty common for animals to get hit because they don't look, they have a tendency to bolt, they have good camouflage so they are hard to see. Of course, if there's a lot of tall grass, shrubs, etc. near the side of the road, that will give them some coverage. We're having a lot more problems with deer the last few years because the population is pretty high, which pushes them into locations where they normally wouldn't be. Insects, dogs chasing them, need for water, etc., can drive deer out of their normal habitat too. A lot of critters are definitely more active during twilight or night hours. I try to stay off roads during those times they are moving around as I don't appreciate a car repair bill (I've only hit one deer in my life, but it caused a lot of damage) or getting my car stunk up by a skunk. We have used deer whistles on one of our vehicles, but it's hard to tell if it actually worked.
