I wouldn't expect it in hours, maybe even days. Some folks recommend putting a new cat in a separate room for a few days.

Thanks, but the thing is our original cat, Sheba, is still traumatized
hours later by the fact that another cat was in HER house. She was
scared to death of Shadow and can't seem to realize that Shadow is not
in the house now.
You think this is something she'll get over and the 2 of them could coexist? I don't really care if they become buddies. I just want them to be able to coexist without physical harm or emotional trauma. (Yes, I think animals have emotions.)
