Re: Reviving the ant conversation

Borax works equally well if you cannot find boric acid powder and is
considerably cheaper. I have used both with success. See if you can locate
where they are coming in--follow the trail--and place it there. It will not
hurt pets. Ants love my dog treats and dog and cat food. We hang a garbage
pail from the ceiling on the porch which the cats have learned to jump into
to eat, and the ants haven't figured how to get in there. It looks a little
strange, and we have to explain it to visitors, but it works great. My dog
food storage is in a sealed container on wheels so it is up off the floor,
and I keep lots of Borax on the counter where I keep treats. We also put
Borax in all our food cabinets, and cupboards. I do spray counters (ants
are just a fact of life in Florida) where my pets are not, and behind
places, like stoves and cabinets, and freezers, etc. I also use the Borax
there. This also discourages cockroaches, which are common here (we like to
call them Palmetto Bugs).

Funny story is my mother, who was an immaculate housekeeper (I do not take
after her), used to come and when she was still able, she used to do a
"spring cleaning" type affair. She would come for about 4 months over the
winter. She would tell me how filthy my cabinets were. But, the bugs would
get worse while she was here cleaning feverishly. We finally realized the
"dirt" she was removing was the Borax!!!!! I wasn't half as bad a
housekeeper as she was accusing me!!!!
