Okay. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, because I will admit to having gone to
different sites to get the following crammed education to make sure no one
was saying any one thing or leaving one thing out so I could get balanced
views.
Here's what I understand. She went to Hanoi in July 1972 to protest the war
and to berate Nixon.... She visited hospitals, schools, etc. to get a feel
for the people. Of course, it wasn't like these people were our enemies
because from what little understanding I have of this war is that troops
were sent over there to get some control...not for some grievance that had
been committed. So from what I'm gathering, nobody was upset with her being
there at the actual time she was. When she got home and the pictures were
seen, people took them badly and got angry. Still not a great big deal from
what I can understand. Now here's where I understand it gets sticky. The
POW's were forced to meet with her unbeknownst to her. They had to tell her
they were treated well, fed well, etc. She was young and seeing the world
through rose-colored glasses is my guess....love child, peace, and all that
jazz. Anyway, to her naivety she believed the POW's and came home and told
us they were doing well. We were still okay with this and glad she had made
that effort....the POW's had even told her (still under duress that she
didn't realize) that they had done wrong and knew why they were POWs to
begin with. So still believing what she thought she learned, when the POWs
came home, recanted, she acted rash and stupid and called them liars because
of what they had told her while she was over there. Then all hell broke
loose and everyone is on her ass ever since. That seems to be it. No charges
were brought as a lot of the stories told later were found not only to be
untrue but defamation and derogatory with no truth to them.
Is my condensed version what those who were adults in '72 remember? Like I
said, I went to a bunch of different Web sites to read this and tried to
pick only the ones that seemed neutral and just told the stories....so.
