Re: OFF TOPIC -Hanoi Jane anti-war bus tour

I guess if you fall in the ocean that far away from shore swimming might be moot point? I know, though, seems really strange.

When my older daughter joined the Navy, I was amazed at the number of people who joined who couldn't swim. And they wanted to be on a ship, thousands of miles out on the ocean??

I just cannot fathom how someone can volunteer for the military and complain when they are called up to serve, when the purpose of the military is serving in time of war/etc. Personally I don't buy the "It's not their fault because they had no other employment option open to them so they had to join the military," excuse I heard during the Gulf War. It sounds awfully like the guys who used to complain to the Navy chaplain on my husband's first assigned base -- they would tell him that they couldn't stand being on a ship and had to get off (these were mostly attempts to do a snow job). He would answer them, "Well, if you wanted to march, what branch of the service would you join?" "The Army." "If you wanted to fly, what branch of the service would you join?" "The Air Force," "And if you wanted to be on a ship, what branch of the service would you join?" "The Navy."
