I need some assistance - my .wav player

I just bought a new laptop that doesn't have a serial port. My .wav
player, of course, requires it.

I purchased a serial-to-USB converter that so far isn't working well at
all. I figure my other options are to 1) spring for the dock that
would have a serial port, or 2) buy a USB .wav pedal.

I hate to do either as they cost over $100 each and I'm already out $40
for the converter! Anybody have ideas??
