Re: Where'd Valerie go?

I'll just shut up next time and wait for you to post. LOL. That pretty much sums it up nicely. I probably disagree strenuously with what a lot of AAMT members think an MT's job should be. As I learned it to start on my own, having never met another MT (at least that I knew of), I never considered some folks might actually criticize me (and they have) for the way I do my job (to the thanks of the medical professionals for whom I have transcribed).

Whether AAMT will recover financially is anyone's guess, but this
continual and escalating sniping at each other is just plain nonsense.

I disagree, Neal. I plan to be working at least another 20 years, and the failure of our professional organization is an important matter. It says much about those involved in AAMT and also about the huge number of MTs who never joined. Whether they can survive their current budget problems hardly matters to me now. The question is, after AAMT does finally dry up and blow away, what will come next? Who will sit at the health care table and speak for our issues? I'm sorry if you think this is sniping. The original posts LOLing about my no longer being a member were not called for. If this thread doesn't interest you, just stop reading it, no harm done. And I do expect to see you and your nice wife for breakfast in Boulder!

What I fail to understand is, just because someone somewhere started an organization and claimed it represented my profession, why is it my obligation to have anything to do with it? The American Bar Association already exists, but if I go out as soon as I pass the bar and start an organization and call it the American Association of Lawyers and Legal Professionals, that will not mean people should join, and it will not give me or my organization any credibility. Only if I started an organization that meets the needs of its members and relates to the profession in a meaningful way would people join it, and then those who didn't, but were still lawyers, would certainly have the right to criticize it.

One day somebody got the idea to start AAMT, and it was "born." The fact that those people were MTs doesn't necessarily know that they have any idea how I, or even MOST MTs, live or need to be approached. The organization exists now, and it has its own culture. I don't happen to like that culture, or the attittude that seems to surround it. Signing up, paying dues, and even attending meetings that are already inculcated with that culture would just be silly. Volunteering with people I would normally not enjoy spending time with doesn't seem the best use of my time. I did attend our state meeting once, and did not enjoy the meeting, the presentations, or the officers. So to me, joining these folks would be like going to a church whose tenets I don't believe, or signing up for a sport I don't play. They may be medical transcriptionists, but other than that, we just don't have anything in common!
