Re: training, schools, work

Rae's right. IMHO (and speaking as one who's kicked herself daily for picking a Crappy School over these two), Andrews and M-TEC are the only choices. With either course, you will be pretty much guaranteed of being taught correctly--and most importantly, a diploma from either one will give you your pick of job offers (we generally see grads going straight into jobs before they even have time to clean their house one last time). M-TEC offers a second "tier" program that's geared toward people who already have a medical background (e.g. nurses), though I've heard some say it still makes the most sense to take the full course.

Any other course, and you're just setting yourself up for more remedial work, more expense for extra resources, no real instructors to help you figure out why things are done the way they are, and just plain INCORRECT information. Since they're still self-paced, you can conceivably go through them more quickly than the average student. You've already got a good background, having done SUM and LOM once already (both have been updated, of course).

You might want to go to MT Chat's New MTs forum and peruse the sticky threads to get a clue why most people agree (you will basically not find a single negative expressed by grads of these two schools), and then compare the courses at their own websites (mtecinc.com and andrewsschool.com), and then give Susan and Linda a call to see if one appeals to your gut more. I think the difference between the two is very minor, and might depend more on personality. The only comparison charts I've seen are made up by cut-rate schools and are full of errors, so don't go by those.

Never heard of Anderson, BTW--and the point is that you want a school with a name the employers know and respect. You can start your search by asking recruiters which grads they're happy to hire. While grads of lesser schools might talk their way into being allowed to test, many firms won't have the patience to even try--much more efficient to go with the known commodity.

So... I'm researching the different schools. I know you have had this
question before but the replies seem to be from 1997 1998 and I'm
wondering how much you think things have changed. Right now I'm looking
at Andrews, MTec, and maybe Career Step. I did look at all the
comparison guides. Having looked at them, I think I am pretty sold on
Anderson, though MTec offers way more in textbooks, particualrly the
Language of Medicine.
