IOW, you believed the MTSO was telling the truth and had taken a cut in rates to keep the account, not merely trying to find a way to make a bit more. If I know my MTSO is only getting X cents/line, I know she/he can't pay me that amount. If I have reason not to trust their word, I'd be less likely to believe they really weren't getting more than X per line and therefore couldn't raise my line rate.

Short answer to a long question, Jeannie.
As an IC, I would certainly take a cut in pay, assuming I had a good, trusting relationship with the MTSO. Of course, if it were too much of a cut, I would have to decline. That would be a talking point, I am sure.

All well and good, but some people depend on their money to pay bills, etc, and cannot afford to just "quit" a job without another one in the offing, and the MTSO I am referring to does not really like it when her ICs work for somebody else also.
I have a question. How would those ICs feel if they had no job at all? I mean, if the MTSO would've told the account to pack sand instead of renegotiating the contract and keeping the work, even at a reduced rate?
I am not asking this to be snippy or ugly. I am generally curious. I have dropped an account for expecting me to continually lower my rates. I have been dropped because I refused to go any lower. Both times the subs had their work flow and accounts change. Apparently only one had a problem with the changes but when I was dropped, I had no idea it was coming. They had asked me a good while before if I would go as low as an Indian company another department was using (5 cpl) and I told them absolutely not. Then I got an email with less than 48 hour notice that they were dropping me. I couldn't help that. The time I dropped, I did speak with the subs who were working on that particular account and told them what was happening. I even told them that just because I was dropping them did not mean that they could not bid on it themselves - It would no longer be beneficial for me to do it - pick up tapes, print, deliver, fax stats, etc. at the rate they wanted to cut it to and still pay a sub a decent rate to do the work. What should we, as MTSOs, do when the accounts want you to drop your rate or they will drop you? Either way the financial burden is going to be there for everyone involved. I chose to fight for my MT ICs and do the best I could to keep them in work. That apparently was the wrong thing to do based on some comments because what ended up being the terms was apparently not good enough for them. Well..I take that back. I have some very wonderful subs who have been with me for a good while who are grateful for the way I have handled a few of the account "situations". To me, it seems like a double-edged sword. If I drop the account totally, then sub is completely out of work. If I have to renegotiate and then cannot afford to pay them as much _ like I said, I don't run a charity _ then they are not happy either. What should the MTSO do in that situation?
