Right - and you handle yourself as a true IC in that respect. Many people
get into this and have no clue and need you to hold their hand and then
they get mad and say you treated them like an employee. I have started to
make it my rule not to hire someone that does not know how to give me a
bill, count a line or give me a bid. I certainly won't be as likely to put
myself in a sticky position by offering to mentor/train someone because
they will apparently complain about that too in the end.
I have resumes from people who don't have any idea how to bid on an
account. They say - I've always been told what the pay is and what the TAT
is, etc. They don't have contracts to present to me but then they get
upset when I present them with one and say it is one-sided. DUH. Provide
me with one of your own, then. If you do not know how to conduct yourself
as a business then don't get bent out of shape when I write out something
to protect myself that you think does not protect you enough. Write your
own. Take some initiative. Don't ask - What do your other subs make?
When I ask you what you charge. Don't ask - How do I count lines? when I
ask you what your line rate is. Don't ask - What is a line? when I ask
you how you determine a line. Don't ask - You mean I need to get a line
counting program? How do I give you a bill? How do I figure out my total
due from you? It really is ridiculous. If I hold your hand and tell you,
then you are going to scream that I didn't treat you like an IC. OTOH, if
I don't (or someone else does not) tell you, then you don't have a
paycheck. I have someone right now that I "met" on another message board
who really wants to become a "real MT". By real, I mean that she has
always worked in house, has no clue about working/running as a business,
etc. She has failed numerous tests because she was taught incorrectly in
house, etc. I am doing my best to help her get her "bearings" and help
mentor her but this will only end up benefitting someone else (another
MTSO) because I am afraid that she would come back and scream about being
treated like an employee if I were to take her on as a sub. It really is
ridiculous that you cannot help someone for fear of them going after you in
the end.
