Exactly, Neal. Now whether your work would have actually been cut back you wouldn't know for certain until you implemented the rate hike. Might be that was just blowing smoke and that because you do good work reliably, you'd still get plenty. It's not easy to find good MTs or MTs who actually are reliable - at least from stories I have heard along the way. I also know I am getting an excellent line rate from my MTSO and that there is a limit beyond she can't go because she can't keep going up on her rates to her client and expect to keep them. We are both "small potato type" businesses, and that's the way I want it. I don't want huge line committments daily or weekly. I like the set up in which I'm working, so I'm not going to rock the boat too hard. If something else better came along and I two MTSOs I knew were tickled to have me, then I could be in position to dare "rock the boat" with one or the other, letting the chips fall where they may - i.e., knowing I'd still have plenty of work from the other. If I were working simply to keep myself busy, rather than actually having a need for the income, I could afford to play prima dona

Even though an IC should be able to raise the rates they charge the MTSO, I believe there is a certain amount of fear (for lack of a better word) about "telling" the MTSO he/she is going to raise their rates. I know that many MTs I have talked to have stated they are afraid the MTSO will let them go. They feel they need to have another job lined up in case that happens.

I worked for a really good MTSO in the past, and when I mentioned I might need to raise my rates, he told me that was fine, but if I did raise my rates, I probably would not get much work.

It means that the MTSO declined what the MT was offering to work for. It is a two-way street. The MT either decides to stay on under the new
conditions, or she gets a job elsewhere.



Sometimes that is just what it has to come to. Not everyone can pay what the IC asks for. There are limits to what an MTSO can pay for someone to do the work. That does not mean that she does not care about quality or care about her subs, it means that she does not run a charity.
