Okay, grammar nut that I am I hit the books! I would assume that BOS would
have taken the source from AMA, but I wondered what the grammar books say.

I could not find specifics applying to the medical terms, but I did find
some word analogies that indicate "was" could be used. They gave as
examples:
"The majority IS in charge. Still, a majority of voters ARE unhappy.
The total WAS in the millions. A total of six WERE missing.

Clearly that's the same kind of situation with milliliters/blood.

Those were NOT the rules when I was in school, but they make sense. I stand
corrected, but I tend to balk at changes in grammar rules. There is a
section in "Woe is I" on the word ALL which is really confusing!

My husband, who had the same grammar school English teacher who drummed all
this into us, agreed with my original version.

Now I'll have to go hunting through my books on the proper use of
proved/proven. I already discovered that the use of "like" has been
modified somewhat in usage, though still not technically correct as it is
often used.
