Re: New word in operative report

To be a good business person, one of the first things one must do is identify the competition. Helping someone is not always helping the competition. Competition is one who would do the actual work you are doing, as in Neal's case. Answering a question for someone who lives in Seattle when I live in Toledo isn't helping my competion because my clients don't send their work to Seattle and have no desire to do so. Selling my book on the nuts and bolts of being an independent contractor wasn't helping my competition because all the books were sold to other areas and they were not competing for my clients. Not everyone who is an MT is the competition.

Every time you answer a question on a word board, every time you
participate in discussion on any of the boards about business, you are
helping your competition. You help your competition by selling them a
book on how to set up their business to compete with you.

This was brought home to me a couple times in the last few years when
people told me something I said really helped them and I didn't even
remember saying it.

So if you're really not going to help your competition, you only
participate in the off-topic discussions.
