It certainly seems reasonable to me that a landlord would be willing to change the due date in such a circumstance. I can't imagine why they would want to make a fuss, have to re-rent the apartment, and possibly risk someone who lives like a pig and doesn't pay rent at all.

In my experience, people who habitually pay the rent late aren't good tenants. Maybe you live in a kinder, gentler part of the US.

Could be. I have a friend who generally always pays her rent late, well late according to the lease, but the exact time every month (another one of those payday-doesn't-match-due-date things). I'd have her as a tenant in a heartbeat. She takes immaculate care of the premises and goes over and above what she's required to do, such as tending the weeds, which is someone else's responsibility, and that sort of thing.
