Re: OT: Anyone a landlord?

Everyone has difficulties at some time or another, and probably most of the people here wouldn't be a complete hardass with a good, long-time tenant who called them and told them that the check was going to be a day late if it came right down to brass tacks. The late payment penalty is in place for a good reason, though; to deter people from making a habit out of it.

One month, my landlord called me around the 10th and said, "Hey, Anne, I'm just calling because we haven't received your rent check, and your check is ALWAYS here on time, so I wondered what was going on." I was mortified, checked with the bank, and indeed their check hadn't cleared. I mailed him another check immediately, with his promise to cash only one of the checks, and to call me if he received the first one. Sure enough, the first check arrived the next day; I'd left a 0 off their suite number when I addressed the envelope. No questions asked, he mailed one of the checks back to me and didn't charge me the customary late fee. He could have, though, and would have been perfectly justified in doing so. That's just another reason I say he's so great to deal with, although there's no question in my mind that if I mailed my check on the 10th, he'd expect me to pay a late fee.

People are (as usual) jumping to conclusions. I am NOT talking about those who are deadbeats on their rent while sucking down the beer and snorting the rent money up their nose. The way some of y'all seem to think is that nobody ever deserves a break or has an actual hardship.

Funniest thing about this is how this thread started. I was trying to help give Bambi some ideas for help in her landlord situation. If I reacted like some here I'd have ripped her a new one explaining sanctimoniously that she should just pay her rent no matter what. Go figure
