Dee, do you have DSL available? That's what I use for both work and internet access, through SBC, and it's been very reliable. I don't understand much about the workings of that kind of thing, but I would think that if the electricity and phones are working, the DSL would as well.
I'm glad to hear that you, your family and your home weathered the storm so well. You are indeed fortunate! I know that the need to work is urgent, though, and hope you can get back up and running asap.

Hey everybody. I just got back to what's left of my home town "Gulfport" after fleeing Katrina. The destruction is horrible. Hard to even recognize where you are in some places. There are people sitting outside their homes that were destroyed...no electricity, no water. Just driving by those places..the stench is unbearable. I'm not sure if they're there to protect whatever is left of their belongings or if the shelters are full...or they have no way to get there or if they're disoriented and confused. There are so many X's marking buildings, it makes you think you are in a movie depicted by Revelations in the Bible. BUT...on a POSITIVE note...the donations, Red Cross and other orgs. are here. There is water, ice, food, clothing, toys for the children available. The lines are long...but at least they're here. I want to tell you one story that is so heart warming and heart breaking at the same time...just a look at how much human compassion and people coming together in a time of need (things the media are NOT saying). A little boy standing in line at one hand-out center...lost both parents but still has his grandparents. He turns to his grandmother and says "look grannie, a walking cane for grampa". All he asked for was a pet carrier so he could go get his dog that survived. Someone ahead of him in the line had gotten the last one..they gave it to him.
I had a guardian angel overlooking my place. No roof damage, no leaks, nothing stolen. I have electricity, running water (although not safe to even use for clean up until boiled). What I don't have is cable for internet access. That means...NO WORK. I have to do something and do it quick. I've not been able to work since Sunday before the hurricane hit on Monday. I had worked until the wee hours Sunday morning...watching...trying to decide if I should evacuate..trying to get in touch with my son to make sure he left. When finally, by mid morning on Sunday, it was obvious the storm was still at such a magnitude and not moving more eastward, I managed to get in touch with my son and we fled with only a survival kit (basic needs) without even thinking to take my foot pedal and headset..let alone the computer itself.
So now, we move on and get back to living..but HOW? My computer does not have an internal modem. My external modem that I used when I worked on the MTS was lost along with other furniture and things I had in storage <sigh>. If I can find an external modem and get it shipped in here...am wondering are there any MTs that use regular dial-up for internet access? Do you get knocked off much and/or is it slower production-wise? Should I just chalk it off to a lost cause and relocate to somewhere I can get cable or broad band service? I haven't been able to contact cableone.net (which is what I used) to find out how long its going to take to repair...I can only assume it may be months or weeks at least...and I CANNOT go that long without working. Any suggestions and ideas much appreciated.
Dee
