She's right. If the mother was a mouser, they usually teach the
kittens how to hunt, but a lot of house cats haven't been taught to
hunt. All they know to do is to meow at their food dish, waiting for
the Science Diet to magically appear. Mousing is not an instinct, it
has to be learned.

As for my dog fending for herself...she'd sit waiting for the doorbell
to ring (which means "pizza's here"). If she were outside she'd just
be a meal fo a pit bull. She was never taught the concept of
protecting herself or the family. She's just another one of the kids.
