You don't do it, you talk like you're a very wonderful and caring mom, and
you love all your kids no matter how long you have them, and you give them
life when maybe no one else would, yet you can in your heart of hearts say
that there may be a circumstance that would condone the caging of a child? I
can't help it, I'm floored. The lawyer released a statement to the press
saying that the cages were for the parents to get some sleep at night, the
security of the children, and for discipline. What other facts are there,
what possible facts could there even be that would call for it? I cannot
even fathom such an instance and I'll tell you if ever there was a kid who
needed restraints it's my 5 yo nephew who is hyperactive to an extreme with
severe behavioral issues, i.e. throwing scissors at kids in his class,
strangling them, writing on people, refusing to listen, but even though I
could wring his little neck at times and his mother's, I couldn't put that
child in a cage for any reason.

Dani - slow down and breathe - Yes, I have given birth to a wonderfully
healthy, vibrant 32 yo daughter who is due to deliver my first
grandchild in December. I love children and I think that all children
should be able to feel safe, and secure, and loved in their homes. I
am now in a position where I am able to do that. I love being a mom.
My foster kids call me aunty. One of my first foster kids was a 5 week
old baby with a rare chromosome deficiency, had just had open heart
surgery, was on a respirator, could barely suck at all. Her mom was an
'ice' addict; used all during the pregnancy. She had an older sister
that the grandma had adopted years before. She had a brother 10 months
older than her that an aunt was adopting. Nobody wanted this baby, her
life was too uncertain, too hard. The doctors all told me that the most
anyone could hope for was for her to lay in her crib and do nothing for
the rest of her life - however long that might be. I took one look in
her eyes and knew we would be together for however long God intended.
She will be 5 in October. She is amazing. She functions at the level
of a 2 year old but she is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Each one of the kids
that has come through my door - more than 50 in the past five years-
has had a similar story. Why do I take care of special needs,
medically fragile kids? Because I can, because sometimes there is
nobody else that will. DO I go out searching for them - No, there are
so many at risk kids that my phone rarely stops ringing. Have I ever
taken in more than I could handle - I don't think so, I hope not. I
think every child that leaves here is at least a little better off, a
little more sure of themselves, of their worth. The most I have had
was 7 - but I was special licensed for extra sibling teens for a short
period. I am licensed for five. I have learned to say No when asked if
I can take another, even if I have the bed space, if the timing isn't
right. Right now I have just three foster kids, and my 5yo. Many times
you don't know the background of the kids you take in - they are like
onions, and as the layers are peeled you find out more, and more, and
more about them. Have I ever sat and cried for an hour wondering what
I was going to do. Oh Dani, I have cried for way more than an hour. I
have cried as I rocked a 4yo who was telling me about the sexual abuse
she endured at the hands of her father. I have cried when a 5yo -
having night terrors - tried to claw her way out a closet because
someone was trying to get her, I have cried as I bandaged the arms and
the abdomen of a 16yo cutter - and cried again when the doctors wanted
to admit her to a psychiatric facilty and she screamed "Aunty, don't
let them take me there, don't let them take me." I have cried with a
17yo girl who gave birth to a beautiful baby boy - the product of
incest- and I cried with her for the three heart wrenching months it
took her to decide to give the baby up for adoption - and I have cried
for and with my own daughter. I know the joy and the pain of being a
mom - and so do you, I get it. No, i would not cage my child, I would
not cage any child. I am not the one being accused here - and I will
not condemn someone before I have the facts - because I do understand
what MAY have happened and what MAY have led to the confinement of the
kids.
