Re: We're home

Good to hear that you made it home, and were spared. Yes the news did tell
about the heat, and show that a lot of people were running out of gas, and
all the stations were out as well. Oh what a horrible mess!! I'm from
Amarillo, and grew up in Del Rio, and I know full well just how hellish hot
Texas heat can be.

Not sure if you already heard this, but there was an awful bus fire that
involved elderly nursing home residents that lost their lives. Now the news
is saying that the bus company that was transporting them had one of the
worst safety records of any bus company in the entire US.

The evacuation was a nightmare, much worse than the storm itself was
where I live. It took us 26 hours to cover less than 200 miles, at
which point we were back in the storm's path. My car overheated several
times, and gas was nonexistent. I don't know what they've been showing
on the news, but I've never in my life seen anything like the thousands
of people stuck on the side of the highways in broiling heat, with hoods
up to indicate that they were out of gas; old people, infants, dogs,
cats, birds in cages, fancy RVs and old beater cars, all the same; no
gas. I don't know how long it took DOT to get gas to those poor folks;
there were so many, I just can't conceive of how it could be done in any
kind of timely manner. It was really overwhelming. I was so very, very
fortunate in that my car made that 26 hours before the gas light came
on, at which point we were in the town we were supposed to evacuate to.
No gas there either, but at least there was more hope of assistance as
opposed to along the road. We ended up at a Jack in the Box (glory of
glories, air conditioning and ice!!!!) and spread out blankets in a
field next to the parking lot so we could get the dogs out and stretch
our legs for a while. We were finally able to get $20 of gas and get
out of there when hurricane warnings were issued there as well, and as
time went on, it became apparent we would have been as safe at home as
anywhere, so we made our way back. We had to drive through the storm,
and it was pretty intense, but we were okay. I have to say that I
didn't see a single car the whole time we were driving through Houston,
only horizontal rain and distant transformers blowing, and it was really
eerie. Like a bomb had gone off and we were the last people left alive
or something!

Absolutely no damage to my house, no cracked glass or flooding. We only
got 2 inches of rain here, if my rain gauge is accurate! I have power,
phone and water. The only thing out is the cable. Lots of branches
down, fences down, traffic lights damaged, etc., but not at my house. I
feel very fortunate, both for the lack of damage to my home and that my
friends insisted on going home last night, as I understand that the
returning evacuees are going to be facing the same conditions that we
did on the way out of town. May God be with all of them. I know He was
with us.
