I think 120 bucks for a female dog is probably pretty reasonable. I haven't had occasion for that procedure, as all the dogs I've had save one male were already fixed when I got them.

I've been lucky enough to only to run into one bad vet over the years - but that one was REALLY bad. Small dog with a cancerous tumor (as yet undiagnosed); the vet "lanced the abscess" and sent the dog home still bleeding. The poor little mutt nearly bled to death, was seizing and the whole nine yards before we were able to get him to a different vet. Same guy did a piss-poor job of setting a fractured leg on another dog. (Someone else's dog; I wouldn't have taken another animal of mine back there if he'd been the last vet on the planet.) The leg rebroke in the same spot within hours of having the pins removed. Another vet splinted it, and the leg healed just fine. He said he couldn't see why the leg was pinned to begin with, unless someone was just out to make a buck. However, that's the only one I've ever run across like that.
Once, when my regular vet was out of town, I took a cat to a clinic which seemed to be the sort some of you are talking about; they wanted to do testing and treatment the same way things would be done on a human, and it was tremendously expensive. I don't question their expertise, though; they seemed to be very good at what they did and very dedicated to their profession and to the critters they cared for, just a different philosophy than I was used to, and one I couldn't afford. However, they were very kind and helped my kitty all they could.
The other vets I've taken my animals to have just been outstanding and have been very fair in their prices. As I said in an earlier post, I suspected my present vet was just disgustingly reasonable in his medication prices, and I confirmed it when I found that I get my Heartguard from him at a price much lower than I found it on the Net. One of the sites recommended here sold it for more than twice the price I'm paying. Rabies shots are $12, no office visit required. Sigh...I suppose this means that $120 for spaying a dog is pretty reasonable, huh? This is the first one I've had to have done in a long time, and for some reason, I didn't think it would be quite that expensive. I know, I know, it's major surgery, and I definitely do NOT want a litter of puppies!!! And when I compare that to the $400 mentioned earlier for neutering a cat, I guess I'd better just shut up and fork over $120 and be happy for it. <G>

Those of us who have found good vets are lucky. I love this guy and hate thought of losing him to someoe who tries to practice medicine like they are treating a human. All well and good to be cautious, but many pet owners simply cannot afford to run every test in the book for a pet.
Horse vets, OTOH, IMHO can be another story. A paramedical equine professional told me that up north in my state a farm call can be very expensive. Forget now but it was well over 100 bucks. That is what they charge just to show up - not to do ANYTHING. Another person told me just asking a question got her charged for a consult fee of some kind. Of course they don't tell you before they answer. First equine vet I had quit mid-treatment. Just did not show up to finish shots. When I called her, she said she would come out (DUH). Then she just marched out of her car, needle drawn. Now the mare who allowed not only shot with no fuss, but also venipuncture, has to be restrained. Then there's the equine vet I called three times over two days to even get a phone call back. Forgive me if I am just a tad sour on some so-called "professionals."

Someone who was so inclined probably could and would. I've never run into that particular problem, thank goodness.

True. And they can use that line all they want to make money. If you have a good relationship with a vet and tell them the dog has had their meds on schedule, shouldn't be a big difference.
