Ed,
Marina had a similar problem. In her case, the disk was herniated,
pieces damaged the sciatic nerve in addition to compressing it. The
surgery was 100% successful in eliminating the pain, but the damage to
her nerves appears to be permanent 1.5 years post-op. She has a wide
strip of numbness down her left buttock, leg, and the outside half of
her foot. As a result, she does not walk properly, which is causing
problems in her hips, right leg, and foot.
Just last week, she simply put her left foot down to get out of a
chair, started to stand up, and heard a horrible tearing and crackling
sound, followed by searing pain in her left ankle. A visit to an urgent
care center revealed no breakage, but a major sprain. We can only
suspect that she didn't plant her left properly, but because of the
numbness, couldn't feel it, and this caused the sprain.
She is very conservative when it comes to medical treatment and went
the steroid injection into the spine route first, but that provided
less than 12 hours of relief. As a result, it was approximately 2 weeks
before she had surgery. It's possible that if she had surgery sooner,
she might not have this permanent nerve damage.
You have our prayers for a fast and complete recovery, no matter what
you choose to do.
