Re: What we take for granted

A guy we know of around here says he hit a moose on his bike. YIKES. I remember as a young teen we were vacationing in Bermuda. Some friends of my mother's were there too - we had friend/they had relative living there. My mom's friend was riding a motorbike there. Mind you, the max speed is 20 mph (or was) for even cars. She got hand controls confused and went fast instead of slow. HElmet was nicely scraped but she was ok for most part. I don't know why they don't wear more protection. Just a little makes a huge difference.

As I stated, I recently went off a small horse with a helmet and cracked a rib. Had I been wearing the saftey vest I had I would have been fine. I know this because about a month later, before my rib was fully healed, I got on the beast again WITH the vest. This time, out of character, he bucked, bolted and headed for home. I went off again. This time the vest saved even my not healed rib, even though I landed flat on my back (posterior rib fx) ,and I was able to get up, get him, and get back on (the prior falls caused brain damage apparently). I can only imagine how much protection full leather gear would give sliding down the road. By the time the leather gave, you might get skinned, but it would be a lot more superficial.

I know a lady who was riding on the back of her husband's motorcycle
(she was wearing leather and a helmet). They were traveling with
another couple on another bike. A DEER (no kidding) jumped right in
front of them, they hit it, the bike went down, and she said she could
hear her helmet skidding along the pavement, and was praying it held up
so her ear and the side of her face didn't come off). She had a few
broken bones and a lot of bruises, but she survived and it was because
of her helmet. She still has what's left of it today. Other people
think it's hideous, but she thinks it's beautiful.

In 1980, when I was about 7 months pregnant, my husband was involved in
an accident while riding home from work on his motorcycle. A car
pulled out in front of him and his choices were to hit the car or drop
the bike and go under the car. He decided to hit the car. He hit the
front quarter panel of the car on the driver's side, flipped over the
windshield of the bike, hit his head on the hood of the car and landed
on the pavement on the passenger side. His helmet was scraped up
pretty much and he had a very mild headache but no concussion, no brain
damage. He did, however, break the right fibula just above the ankle.
Had he not been wearing a helmet, he would more than likely been killed
that day.

I am a HUGE supporter of wearing helmets while riding motorcycles. I
would never get on a bike without one. I also preferred a full
coverage helmet and not one of those "turtle shell" type of helmets.
