Yeah, I see a lot of generic boxes listed, but I would be much more comfortable buying something like a Dell.
The problem with buying a proprietary computer (Dell, Compaq, HP, Gateway, etc.) is that they don't use off-the-shelf parts and it is horrendously expensive to upgrade or replace parts.
I buy computers from a local shop with a good reputation that builds machines to the buyer's specifications with off-the-shelf parts, and their prices are good and their service far exceeds anything you can get from Dell or anywhere -- I did something to my computer (my daughter bought it from them, but I "traded it with her for buying her a laptop to take to college) on a Thursday night and messed something up so that it wouldn't boot (and the system recovery was turned off so I couldn't do that), and the first thing Friday morning when they opened their doors, it was my computer and me parked at the door waiting to come in. Two and a half hours later plus $25 for labor and $80 for a second, larger hard drive that I decided to put in, I went home and re-set everything up and was back to work. And that's typical of the service I have gotten from them.
