It seems that when people gathered to worship in Jesus' time (and in some
houses of worship today), sometimes it would turn into a personal contest of
who could pray the loudest and demonstrate the most humility.

The passage above speaks against doing that, but it does not speak against
acknowledging and being thankful to God in prayer in public circumstances.
