I experienced a similar problem in the past with one of my machine. My
WinXP Pro would not boot up, and I was only able to access the BIOS.
After a few hours of hair-pulling, I finally opened the case and
checked all connections. To my horror, a wire that connects to the
motherboard was loose, and one of the memory RAM sticks was loose as
well. I reattached the loose connection to the motherboard, and made
sure that the RAM stick had a snug fit into the socket.
It solved my problem.
I suggest you open your machine case and check. If all connections are
okay, the only thing I can think of, is to reformat your hard drive and
reinstall WinXP Pro. You can call a small mom and pop computer shop and
ask them for a OEM copy of WinXP Pro SP2, which is less expensive than
the commercial version.
