Re: Computer problem - stop error on boot up

I see where the error they're talking about matches the first and second parts of the string, but what about the rest of it? I feel so stupid about this kind of thing! The other reason I didn't think this article applied to us the first time I looked at it is that this is definitely not a new install of XP.

Here is the Microsoft knowledge base article pertaining to your exact error. I knew I had been to it when I fixed my aunt's computer and had been looking for it since your post. I tried everything and it ended up being the bad sector on the hard drive I mention, but you may want to print this out and try a few of the things and see:

One of the computers in my house has run into major problems, and we've been fighting with it for about a week now, with no luck in finding the problem.

On bootup, we get a stop error with no message to clue us as to what is causing it. The code it gives is 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF7E744D0, 0xFC937FC8, 0xFC937CC4), and we get no beep on startup. It will start in safe mode, and power seems to be okay.

This is a Compaq Presario model 7596 running WinXP Pro. It refuses to restore to an earlier restore date. The truly delightful thing is that the system was passed down to us and we have no software for it; no restore CD or copy of XP specifically for that system. :-(

I've searched high and low on the web and can't find anything that really fits the situation. When I search for the first string of the error message, I get all kinds of hits, but most of them seem to pertain to a new install of XP or new hardware, neither of which has been done to this machine. Adding any other part of the string brings me no hits at all. MS Support has been less than helpful, or maybe I just don't understand what I'm reading. Compaq Support....well, I won't even go there. Device Manager claims all components are working normally. Virus and spyware scans come up empty.

I wondered about a BIOS update but can't seem to find out what motherboard is in this thing (why they don't print that info on the motherboard in such a way that everyday people can find it is beyond me) and have also been advised that trying this may not be the best idea for someone who isn't a computer tech. (I've done one BIOS update in the past on a different system with no problems, but could be I was just lucky.)

Anybody have any ideas? I'm considering chucking the system in the trash, but its owner might not appreciate it. Maybe it would make a good doorstop...

Anne
