I think they are so quick because of the "teen shorthand". I learned a bit
of it when we had one living with us. I still cannot force myself to do it
in IMs or text messaging (short mail on my phone) but I imagine I will make
myself one day (just on the text messaging, though. I can type it out
faster than trying to remember all the little abbreviations).
