Re: How long must hospital maintain records

The link you provided was for nursing homes, not for hospitals. I googled "hospital medical records retention" and found the site for the Massachusetts Senate Bill 1292 wanting to change medical record retention from 30 years to 15 years.

If you'll go to the link I provided you'll notice that nursing homes are mentioned too and there's still not one over 10 years.

Nursing facilities (nursing homes) have different stipulations than hospitals in some states. Massachusetts SB 1292 is to reduce the time of retention from 30 years to 15 I believe.

Only states required to keep as long as 10 years are:

Connecticut
Georgia
New Jersey
New Mexico
North Dakota
South Carolina
South Dakota
Tennessee

All the rest are either five or seven, except for Vermont and Washington which are eight. All states have stipulations for minors is the only difference.

I don't know about nursing homes ("residents" as mentioned in the link below) but the last time I went to a medical records seminar, it was ten years (although some hospitals keep records longer than that). A slide is just part of a medical record, so I believe the length of time they keep it would be the same as a written record.

Is there specific law requiring California hospitals to retain copies
of medical records for a period of time. A hospital provided medical
records of a 15 year old surgery but is having difficulty finding the
pathology reports which may be crucial to a malpractice charge. Do
hospitals have additional requirements to retain slide specimens.
