Just trying to think of what kind of person might want this...now what
if a person bought up a bunch of transcription companies to employ
their new grads (just for instance, if they had a school), but maybe
now they don't have too many new grads...so what better way to still
get cheap labor AND take a chunk of the student market that's going to
the GOOD schools, than to start an *apprentice program*, with the
blessing of AAMT, of course? After all, this will affect the number of
new students in the existing schools. Why pay for training when we
will PAY you to train? Mark my words, you will see that ad on a
matchbook or a website very shortly, and especially on the WAHM boards.
Geez.

Whatever happened to hospitals hiring people and training them
themselves? That's what they did with me. I realize it takes money
and time, but when you're offering them benefits, PTO, and insurance,
and a nice wage (I was getting $10 an hour to TRAIN 10 years ago),
they're less likely to leave. On the other hand, the hospital is less
likely to dump you, too - I don't know if it's that they have to have
just cause to let someone go, or that by seeing your face every day,
there's a morale thing with the other employees. Firing people doesn't
go over well when you know what they look like. Maybe working at home
is part of the problem. They don't see us, don't talk to us, we're
just an e-mail address...my account never even bothered to tell me they
were going with someone cheaper.

If an apprenticeship is needed, I think the hospitals should do it like
they used to do (but they paid great wages to train us). This "work at
home no matter what" mentality is killing us. Working at home should
be a privilege for the ones who can be trusted to do so. You work in
house for say, a year or 2 if no school, and 6 months or so, at least
until you have proven youself if you went to school first, before you
can go home. Making it something you do right off the bat isn't
working. An apprenticeship won't help it, lower wages from employers
don't help. You need someone working in the next cubicle, close
enough to listen for you, give you little tips and tricks, explain the
fuzzy areas, who are paid by the hour so they aren't ticked off at
being bothered all day long. Newbies need helpers, and willing helpers
who are being compensated fairly so they aren't penalized for helping.
Getting feedback after the fact doesn't help someone who is learning.
Even if they had instant feedback (say, from IM) it wouldn't be the
same.

I think all it will take is for a doctor to accidentally get one of
these apprentice-type documents, or someone within AAMT will use the
lack of quality coming from these apprentices to say "we HAVE to lower
our wages - the quality just isn't there." Whatever the motive, I
think the whole reason for this is not for the betterment of MTs, but
to line someone's pockets. This won't supply any more good MTs - it
will just make an even larger pool of bad MTs, and the result will be a
lowering of our wages...again.

And of course, this is just my opinion, a "for instance." No certain
person(s) in mind.
