And then there's the very obvious, too--the machine has to be set to
"auto answer" for it to discern a voice call from a fax.
LOL! One of the most humbling experiences I've ever had was when I
dropped my dedicated fax/modem line. I decided that since I hadn't
used a regular modem for years and my HP could discern fax from voice,
why pay for that line? OK...that meant routing my HP 4-function,
cordless phone, caller ID unit and answering machine correctly so that
my home phone could also take faxes AND I could use my answering
machine as well on the same line.
The key to it all is that the outgoing answering machine message must
be exactly the right length to give the HP time to discern which kind
of call is coming in. I had lost my answering machine instructions,
but thank heavens info like that can be replaced and downloaded from
the Web! Hooray for Google! <GG>
I'd be embarrassed to tell how long it took to get it set up right...
