Honestly, I believe that until MT is compensated the way it should be and
not stagant or worse for years in terms of pay, there is always going to be
a shortage of qualified MTs. IMO, our professional organization has failed
miserably over the years and continues to fail. I realize this is a global
economy and I certainly welcome the competition from an offshore concern
but it is causing us to fight for our rates here in the US. If the work
were comparable, it might be apples against apples but every offshore
product I have seen has not even come close to the quality necessary for my
accounts. That said, it isn't related just to offshore companies either.
There are American MTs who are just as bad and doing all the undercutting
in the world to get their foot in the door too. There needs to be something
to regulate the profession and even the playing field. Until then, why
should be expect someone to take this seriously as a profession and go to a
good school to get what they need in terms of education? I mean, honestly,
do you see potential doctors/nurses/attorneys/accountants, etc. just lining
up to get into the cheapest school they can? MT is not represented as a
profession and it is not given the respect it deserves. Until then, I
imagine we will continue to spin our wheels until we no longer can afford
to work for less than we made 7 years ago.
