MedTransition is a school-to-work program that Carol and I have been
operating since April of 2005. We take MTs who have graduated from a
formal MT school and put them to work on live acute care transcription.
All of the reports are reviewed by QA editors and corrected before the
work is submitted to the client, and the MTs get feedback from the QA
staff.

We have not used the name of the school as part of the screening
process; we have an evaluation exam the MTs have to take and we also
use short-term contracts as a means of allowing us to evaluate an MT's
potential before deciding whether or not they can continue in the
program.

My overall impression at this point is that ALL MT schools need to do a
better job of preparing MTs for the real world, and some schools have a
lot farther to go than others. At the same time, I've found that an
individual MT from a lesser-known school can excel, while another MT
from a top-tier school can struggle mightily, all of which makes me
hesitant to focus too much attention on the school itself. More than
ever I'm convinced that MT is a field for which one either has a talent
or not, and it's difficult to make a GOOD MT out of someone who just
doesn't have that "something."
