The overall level of preparedness of the MTs we've seen coming out of a
wide variety of schools--online schools, community colleges, etc.--is
not as good as what I was expecting, and I didn't have really high
expectations to begin with. The biggest problems are with mastery of
the English language and critical thinking skills. We're also finding
that new MTs are not at all prepared for the unique challenges of
editing voice recognition, which requires a different state of mind
than straight transcription.
The nice thing about our program from the MTs' point of view is that we
deliberately do not impose quotas of any kind on them, we are
interested in developing quality first and foremost. Our program
allows them to develop their skills without the pressure cooker of
having to produce a certain amount of lines in a given period of time.
Since the MTs already know ahead of time that they're not going to be
making much money, that gives them a certain amount of freedom in terms
of concentrating on quality instead of quantity.
