Coming clean.

Ok. The fax. The India guy. The embarrassing moment when I saw my fax
was not plugged in the phone jack. I got through that.
I went _back_ today, redid everything, carefully plugging each wire
back where it was. I'd already done that before, but I was SUPER
careful this time.
I went back to the HP website. We spent an hour going over everything.
He named the problem. Storm clouds were on my horizon and I was about
to give him a piece of my mind about what HP could do with their
inferior products. I didn't say anything, because I still thought it
was my fault, but I was irritated that nothing ever lasts. He asked me
if I would allow HP to furnish a new all-in-one to resolve this issue.
I was thrilled. Of course!
But it was still bugging me. I couldn't figure how it could have been
the part he named. I turned the whole fax machine backward to look at
it...and reaffirmed the fact that I was born blonde.
At some point in all my panicked gyrations the other day, I had plugged
the phone wire in the back of the fax - in the "extension" hole.
