Re: HGTV Dream House Giveaway

I think it is appalling. Around here people who bought homes years ago may not be able to keep them because property values went up, whether they are on the water or in a town, such as one my DH grew up in, where a lot of folks from "away" moved in and pushed values up. I think it's just wrong that someone who worked their whole life should possibly have to consider moving. They need to do something to grandfather these properties out until they are sold. It's just un-American.

I wonder about the Extreme Home Makeover stuff, too. I saw the one they did in Maine (on TV only). WHo is going to pay real estate taxes now that house is worth so much more than what they had before.

Here we pay personal property taxes, which is on the county assessed value of the property and not necessarily what it appraised for. It is something I don't quite figure out yet but it is what is driving many people who own houses outright out of certain areas because the assessed value is so high and their taxes are so high. Hey, it isn't their fault they were smart enough to buy property where they did but now that they own it outright they are having trouble meeting the taxes. I heard on the news the other day that someone's taxes went up 4x what it was from last year. I would just swallow my tongue. To me, it seems like they are punishing...crud...what's the word...oh, responsibility. People buy their house and property, pay it off and hope to live there and let their family live there and then THWAP - huge tax bill that you can't afford.
