Rae, Our state sales tax is particularly obscene. At present it's 9.5%
and for 3 months last year it was up to 9.75% but then the state
reduced by 1/4%. That's a real serious consideration if you're buying
say a computer or a car. For many years I always bought all my office
supplies from Quill, and equipment too like fax machine, printers etc.
I bought all my computer equipment from a place in New Hampshire that
never did and still doesn't charge any tax. You probably know that
Quill basically began charging sales tax about 2 years ago and since
then I might as well be going into my local office Staples to just pick
up what I need. It's like they're cracking down on these last bastions
of tax freedoom and it makes me very sad. The only way to fight it is
to reduce consumption which actually isn't all that bad of a thing to
do, or go e-bay or second hand, also try to repair wherever possible
and not replace everything all the time. In Massachusetts there's no
tax on clothes, and that is worth going after. There's a great outlet
mall just over the NY Mass line that is worth my trip.

Maine has the same thing on claiming sales tax if you bought in a state
that didn't have any - and of course we're also very close to NH - not
close enough to really make it worth going there for that reason. We
just pay what the flat rate is rather than try to track it. I think it
is very unfair as it only penalizes folks who try to be honest - if
you
pay cash, they could never trace you.
