Re: Cheney shoots fellow hunter

Had a boyfriend a bit before 1958 who had loud pipes on his car. I could tell his car from every other loud car in town.

Good for your dad. That's a pretty nasty thing to do to a friend's son. Like most people can tell one loud car from another?

My deal was not all that dramatic. What I learned later was that a home had been broken into, and the homeowner identified my car by the sound of the pipes.

I had parked my car about 3 blocks down the street at the Youth Center, and my friend Jerry and I had gone to get a coke. When we returned to my car, suddenly about 5 cop cars blocked us in, guns were drawn, and I was told to start the car and rev it up. I heard someone that I did not see say, "Yeah, that's the one!"

They took me down to the station, told me no reason (I don't think Miranda rights were around then, about 1958), and left me sitting in a room by myself while they probably questioned Jerry. I thought this was just a bit much for a muffler violation, but had no idea it was anything else.

When they got to me, they just asked me what I had been doing, and that is when my song started. I told them everything I had done since that afternoon. Then they told me I could go, still giving me no reason for taking me to the station.

The funny thing was that my dad and the Chief of Police were buddies, and after he quit chewing me out for getting in at 4:30 in the morning, he called the chief and chewed him out for a while.

Exactly, Neal. Most of us wouldn't get a chance to be advised by legal counsel first and we all know that cops are allowed to lie to get you to start to spill your guts. That really galls me. Officers of the law allowed to lie to us but we must tell the truth. After hours of interrogation, especially in a young person or anyone, with them lying to you, many will tell them anything they want to hear to be left alone. It's happened.

Heck, when I was about 18 and the cops hauled me in to the police station and left me sitting in a room by myself for what seemed like hours, I sang like a bird when they started questioning me.
