Judith, you may be right about their spending habits, although I am not<<<<<THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE>>>>>>
sure, but you are throwing a stone where a flower should be planted.
This generation cannot save. Their homes are costing them 250K for
starter houses (if not 500K). Their daycare costs could be as much as
$800/month for one child. Many of these kids do not have the support
of their parents because, as they should, their parents are in
retirement and off having a good time, as opposed our generation, where
the whole family helped with the kids. I know these kids have to have
the best and may not know the word "no" but we did it to them and we
cannot blame them for it now. I feel sorry for this generation,
because they cannot afford to save for their kids college education and
their own retirement and put food on the table.

I don't have nearly the "best" of everything. My mother is shocked at my
mortgage payment for my very modest house, as she bought her first home for
cash for 5% of the price of this one (yes, 1/20 of the price!), and it was
bigger than this one. My expenses for the exact same standard of living
have gone up with alarming speed over the last 5 years - the utility bill
for the same house has just about doubled. Without even considering the
cost of my education (which is a choice I made, and I can live with - I
hope), my generation is definitely not better off than the last, even when
we don't have to have the best of everything.
And yes, my grandmother babysat me, and yes, I paid day care for my son when
he was small. And by the way, that same daycare costs twice as much now as
it did then - not all that long ago.
