Nope, it's actually only telling you what a DOLLAR is worth, today versus then, than what comparable GOODS are worth in the same time span. When I compared what I bought my house for in 1989, it told me it's worth a third of what it was just appraised for last month. There's no way it can adjust for the specific value of anything (and in any specific area, specific quality, condition, etc.) but money, itself.
Of course, Econ was so boring that as soon as I aced the final exam I forgot damned near everything about it, so what do I know? :)

My math isn't too good and maybe this doesn't cover real estate, but it looks like if I spent a dollar in 1993 (year we bought this house) today it would be 1.40. So I multiplied the price of the house then by 1.40. House cost 105,000 in 1993 and that would come out to 147,000 today using that figure. We had a simple assessment done recently for home equity line and it appraised at more than 200,000 - around 220,000 I think. So that sure doesn't apply to real estate - at least not here.
