Well they probably can't cite you for telling them the wrong directions to the donut shop, but I think I'd prefer the "sorry I'm not talking to you" than lying even if it is something you're not remotely involved in.

Maybe in Ohio but not anywhere else I'm aware of. You were more
correct when you said lying under oath is illegal. There's nothing
illegal about lying to an officer when you aren't under oath - stupid,
perhaps, but not illegal.
