DH does extractions all the time. And he does root canals if they appear
fairly straightforward. Sometimes people will beg him to do extraction or
root canal (that he would prefer to send to specialist - more complicated),
simply because of the cost. They can't afford the specialist. And the
specialist won't touch them without payment in full beforehand.

I guess I can understand it if they are in pain and just don't have that
kind of money. I think mine last year was around 1000 bucks and of course
insurance paid a good chunk of that. I'd never had a toothache before and
even though it wasn't horribly intense, it was sure uncomfortable. I'm
shocked at what a simple extraction costs these days, as is my retired
dentist dad - says he quit practicing too soon - and that the general
dentists won't even do a simple extraction.
