Re: Tips on Quitting

Oh yeah ... I loved smoking, too. I used to smoke Winchester's for several
months when I was around 19 or 20. They only cost 25 cents a pack. Mind you,
I smelled like a cigar factory. How I didn't lose my job is anyone's guess.

But you really can't quit for someone else, 'cause if someone else goes away
you risk the chance of going back. You have to quit exclusively for you.

And you can't cheat ever. You're as much of an addict as an alcoholic,
gambler, etc. ---

Try this ... when you crazy a cigarette, go jogging until you feel like your
lungs are ready to explode. You ain't gonna be able to smoke feeling like
that. If you can't jog, find another form of aerobic exercise. ---
Eventually things will get better. Believe me. After I quit smoking 1992, I
didn't get involved in any sort of physical activity until 2000. I started
off just walking 3 mph for 20 minutes, 'cause that was all I could handle. I
slowly increased the speed up to 3.5 to 4 mph for an hour, flat surface and
inclines. One year later I got the sudden notion to try to jog a little ...
and I kept jogging for one solid hour. I was floored.

That's what you can look forward to. Never being out of breath again.

One of the times I attempted to quit was for a guy who detested them.
He reminded me all the time that my breath was not fresh, that my hair
and clothes were stale and nagged me for 6 months and finally did end
up quitting (although I will admit that I occasionally cheated when I
was drinking). I stayed quit for about 6 months with cheating maybe 2
or 3 cigarettes a week so I know I can do it. I have to admit I really
like cigarettes or rather it is a love/hate relationship. I'm not
saying quitting for another person can't work because it did for me,
but I started back up when the relationship ended.

Funny this should come up. There is a new feller in my life.
Unfortunately, he practically goes ballistic over the smell, the sight,
the NOTION of a cigarette. I have never been around a ruder person when
it comes to this.

I immediately took the ashtray out of my car when I started seeing him.
I bought patches. I carry around all manner of personal hygiene items
now - patches, toothbrush, hand wipes, mouthwash. Not because I'm
"minding him" but because I don't want to offend somebody who (at the
time) seemed to be a perfect fit.

At first it was okay as long as I didn't smoke in his house or truck.
Well of course I wouldn't - I wasn't raised by wolves! My daughter did
smoke in his truck but she WAS raised by wolves.

Now it's like "Last night I could really smell the cigarettes on you."
He's gone a little beyond rude - I had cooked 20# of potato salad (boy
was I mad when I found out it was 20 instead of 15, I really felt
wronged then), an enormous container of baked beans, and another huge
container of banana pudding...not because I was hungry, but because he
was having a workday at his race track and I was being "supportive" or
something and feeding the volunteers. I chopped up all the crap it
takes to make potato salad (I'd rather die than make it, but I take a
certain pride in making the best tater salad anywhere), mixed it all
up, tore my kitchen apart, and toted it all over to his house. We are
not like "going steady" or anything, but I like to please him and I
really wanted us to be a couple after he's not so busy with this
enormous project.

So all he remembers is that he could smell cigarettes on me. It made me
real mad, but it also made me realize that this is a HUGE HUGE problem
for me and I'm being stubborn. I have now cut off my nose to spite my
face.

I have to quit and I don't want to but it smells so bad and we all know
that he is not the only person on earth who dislikes smoking (duh). So
I'm listening to this topic with real interest.
