Re: Alzheimer's test?

I watched this on the news today and they said the most indicative test is
still the simplistic pencil/paper tests given. Now they quandry is whether
or not to tell someone at 60 with signs on testing but not showing any overt
signs that they will get Alzheimers. There's also a board formed made up of
Alzheimer sufferers overseeing some of the testing.
There's a strong family history of Alzheimer's on my mom's side. Since
genetically I favor her side, I'm going with the assumption I'm likely to
get it. Some days, I feel like I already have it. It makes me worry about
who will take care of me when I'm old.... :-)

I rarely sit down and listen to a whole newscast, or read the wholeor
newspaper. I have been hearing in the last few days "trailers" about how
they can predict Alzheimer's now. I assume that's with gene testing? I can
never get the whole story. Does anyone know about this breakthrough? This
morning I heard the question about whether its "right" to know beforehand
not, but couldn't hang around to get the whole story. Personally, I wouldeven
want to know now. I would make preparations. No one else in this house
knows how to pay a bill. I really don't think that it would make me go offfullest,
the deep end now or anything. I think I'd just live each day to the
which is what I should be doing anyway, and be prepared for theeventuality.

There is another genetic neurological disease that I can't think of the
of right now, but when I worked for the genetic counselors they had a few
patients that they had to do *extensive* counseling with before they would
test them for the gene. And it was considered unethical to test before
symptoms start occurring. I found this odd.
