Inadequate amounts of taurine in cats' diets causes a form of retinal degeneration, but I wasn't able to find a photo of it online.

No it's not that ... but look at the picture of the normal cat eye and then expand the black circle around the iris. It looks like it's slowly "eating away" the iris.
